The BYU men’s tennis team defeated No. 35 Oklahoma State with a 4-2 victory on March 14, marking its first win over the Cowboys in four decades. The match took place at the Outdoor Tennis Courts in Provo, Utah, and was played before a capacity crowd.

This result is significant for BYU as it represents not only a break from a long losing streak against Oklahoma State but also their second Big 12 conference win since joining two seasons ago. The Cougars improved their season record to 13-3 and snapped an eight-match Big 12 drought.

Head coach Zack Warren said, “Guys competed so well against an outstanding opponent, who already has multiple wins against top 20 teams this year. Oklahoma State is a class team, lead by a class coach. Really proud of the team’s dedication to the process, work ethic and attention to the details, which paid off today.”

Oklahoma State took an early lead by winning both completed doubles matches (6-0 on court two and 7-5 on court one), sending BYU into singles play trailing by one point. In singles competition, BYU responded strongly as David Duong and Tygen Goldammer each secured straight-set victories to give BYU a lead. Hardy Owen extended that lead with a decisive third-set win over Haydar Gokpinar, ending Gokpinar’s twelve-match singles winning streak. After Adam Chodur lost his final set, Caden Hasler clinched the overall match for BYU with a comeback three-set victory.

Warren commented on the atmosphere after the match: “Grateful to Cougar Nation, it was a packed facility and a special college tennis atmosphere,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting back out there and competing together again next week.”

Looking ahead, BYU will travel to Orlando, Florida to face No. 10 Central Florida on Thursday, March 19.
