The BYU men’s tennis team achieved a 9-0 record for the first time in program history since at least 2000, following a close 4-3 victory over Idaho State on Saturday in Provo.
Assistant coach Jonathan Sanchez commented on the match, stating, “I thought Idaho State came out fighting really, really well today and made the match super difficult. One thing we did really well was compete. I don’t think we played our best tennis, but we fought hard. We dug deep to win some tight matches and played the big points well in order to close it out today.”
BYU earned the doubles point with Hardy Owen and David Duong winning their match 6-3. Duong was making his first doubles appearance of the season. On another court, TJ Wells and Tygen Goldammer secured a 7-5 win after trailing earlier in their set. The remaining doubles match involving Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner was left unfinished.
In singles play, Goldammer quickly posted a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-2) for BYU. Caden Hasler followed by taking his opening set before his opponent retired due to injury with Hasler leading 6-3, 3-0. This gave BYU a 3-0 lead.
Idaho State responded by winning two singles matches on courts one and three after dropping their opening sets but coming back to win in three sets each. With BYU’s lead reduced to one point, Wells delivered another straight-set win (6-3, 6-4) that clinched the overall victory for BYU.
The final singles contest saw Idaho State’s Tyler Dalos edge out Brennon Chow—who was making his singles debut this season—in a closely contested tiebreak (10-7).
BYU will next travel to Colorado for matches against Denver on Friday, February 27 and Air Force on Saturday at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts.
