The BYU men’s distance medley relay team secured the Big 12 title on the opening day of the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas. The squad finished with a time of 9:35.98 after leading most of the race. This marks BYU’s first men’s DMR Big 12 championship since joining the conference in 2023.
Two members of the relay are all-time school record holders in other indoor events. In addition to their relay win, Cutting advanced to the finals of the mile event by finishing ninth in preliminaries with a time of 4:06.64.
Noah Jenkins, who ranks seventh all-time at BYU in the 5000-meter, placed sixth overall with a time of 13:53.34. His teammate Isaac Hedengren finished just behind him in eleventh place at 13:59.07.
In the 800-meter preliminaries, Jake Orr finished fourth with a time of 1:50.57 and Jacob Robison took eighth at 1:54.05; both will compete in Saturday’s finals.
Carter Walker achieved eighth place in high jump by clearing 2.03 meters (6-8) on his first attempt, while Connor Saunders matched that height for a personal best and finished eleventh after clearing it on his final attempt.
In pole vault competition, Silas Zimmerman and Dallin Thornton each cleared 5.20 meters (17-0.75), earning eighth and ninth place respectively; this marked Zimmerman’s personal best and Thornton’s season record.
Jonah Heimuli progressed to Saturday’s finals in the 600-yard dash after placing fourth in prelims with a time of 1:09.11.
After four events in heptathlon scoring, Ben Barton is third with 3314 points and Jaden Roskelley is fourth with 3208 points so far. Roskelley led shot put at 14.17 meters (46-6), while Barton topped high jump at 2.04 meters (6-8¼). The last three events will be held Saturday.
