The No. 23 BYU men’s golf team finished day two of The Goodwin tied for first place at 12-under par, following a strong second round on March 27 at the Stanford Golf Course.
This result puts BYU in a leading position heading into the final round, reflecting the team’s consistent performance over both days of competition. UCLA shares the top spot with BYU, while Long Beach State and Stanford are tied for third place just one stroke behind.
Director of golf Todd Miller said, “We started off a little slow today, but like yesterday, we stuck to our process and putts started to drop. I was blown away at a few of the really difficult putts I saw drop.” Miller also said, “If the guys continue to find the fairway off the tee tomorrow, I am confident we will have a chance to win down the stretch. I feel like the team has a lot of trust in each other which allows you to stay in the game even when things get tough.”
Kihei Akina matched his opening round score with another four-under-par effort and is now tied for second individually at eight-under par as he aims for his third consecutive individual title. Simon Kwon completed his second round three-under par and is tied for thirteenth place overall after making five birdies early in his round. Kwon said, “We stayed patient and let the birdies come to us. We played very similarly to yesterday, but we made a few more putts. We drove it pretty mediocre, but we found a way to still score well. My putter felt good today. I made a couple errors off the tee, but I’m looking to hit some good drives tomorrow.” Other notable performances include Peter Kim finishing one-under par and Angus Klintworth scoring an eagle on hole seven.
BYU will attempt to maintain its lead during Saturday’s final round beginning at 9 a.m., with live updates available on Scoreboard as well as social media platforms.
