BYU holds fifth after day two at Big 12 swimming & diving championship

BYU is holding fifth place with 263 points after the second day of competition at the Big 12 Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Arizona State leads the team standings with 618 points, followed by Utah with 473 and Arizona with 472. TCU is fourth with 283 points, while Cincinnati and West Virginia trail behind BYU.

Wednesday’s events saw three new top-10 times in BYU program history. In the finals of the 500 freestyle, Easton Mousser recorded a time of 4:19.92, which is now the second-fastest ever for BYU. Darwin Anderson swam the third-fastest time in school history at 4:20.81. Tyler Edlefsen achieved a time of 1:45.48 in a swim-off for the 200 individual medley, ranking as the fifth-best performance for BYU.

During preliminaries, Tanner Nelson, Anderson, and Mousser all advanced to the finals in the 500 freestyle. Nelson placed fourth overall in prelims with a time of 4:18.31; Mousser finished eleventh and Anderson fourteenth.

In the 200 individual medley prelims, Jacob Ballard and Edlefsen both qualified for finals. Ballard finished his heat in 1:47.34 to secure a spot in the bonus final round; Edlefsen placed ninth overall.

For the third event of Wednesday—the 50 freestyle—Tanner Edwards, Lucca Ferreira, and Max Kleinman reached the first heat of finals. Kleinman finished seventeenth overall (19.95 seconds), Edwards was twenty-second (20.09), and Ferreira twenty-third (20.11).

In finals action, Anderson and Mousser set new top-10 program marks in the 500 freestyle while Nelson took fourth place overall with a time of 4:17.04 after competing in the championship heat.

Ballard ended up twentieth in the final round of the 200 individual medley (1:47.34) while Edlefsen took thirteenth (1:46.65).

All three BYU swimmers who qualified for finals in the 50 freestyle competed together; Kleinman won his heat at 19.72 seconds to finish seventeenth overall, followed by Edwards (twenty-first place) and Ferreira (twenty-fourth).

In diving competition on Wednesday, freshman Ashton Sparks led BYU with a fifteenth-place finish during preliminaries for men’s three-meter diving (285.70). MartĂ­ Llop placed nineteenth (209.50) and Elijah Baker twenty-second (183.20). Sparks improved his score by sixteen points during finals to finish eleventh at 301.70.
