BYU gymnastics upsets No.16 Denver to remain undefeated at home

No. 23 BYU defeated No. 16 Denver with a score of 196.575-195.925 in a gymnastics meet held at the Marriott Center on Friday night in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars started the competition on vault, earning a team total of 49.075 points. Senior Kylie Eaquinto led with her season-high score of 9.850, while teammates Deb Silva and Scarlett Sonnenberg each scored 9.825. This vault performance was the second-highest for BYU this season.

Denver began their meet on uneven bars and posted a score of 49.000.

On uneven bars, Ava Jorgensen and Alilah Alvarado both scored 9.875 for BYU, helping the team reach a total of 49.000 on that event as well. Eaquinto contributed with a score of 9.800.

During the second rotation, Denver earned a score of 48.775 on vault, allowing BYU to maintain its lead at halftime with scores standing at 98.075 for BYU and 97.775 for Denver.

In the third rotation on beam, Brynlee Andersen-Broekman led BYU by scoring 9.875, followed by Sonnenberg’s 9.825 and Jorgensen’s 9.800 as the Cougars totaled 48.950 in that event.

After three rotations, Denver took a narrow lead by posting a floor exercise score of 49.350, bringing their overall total to 147.125 compared to BYU’s 147.025.

In the final rotation on floor exercise, Eaquinto, Silva, Andersen-Broekman and Sonnenberg all achieved scores of at least 9.900 or higher—marking BYU’s highest event total this season with a combined score of 49.550 on floor exercise; it was also their highest floor score since the year 2022. Eaquinto set her season high at 9.950; Silva reached her career high at 9.925; while Andersen-Broekman and Sonnenberg each recorded scores of 9.900—with Sonnenberg also achieving her career best.

Denver finished their competition with a beam routine totaling 48.800 points in the final rotation which allowed BYU to regain the lead and secure victory by just over half a point margin.

With this result, BYU remains undefeated in home meets this season.

BYU is scheduled to travel next week to Morgantown, West Virginia to face West Virginia University on Friday, February 27th at 5 p.m Mountain Standard Time.
