BYU gymnastics secures win over West Virginia to finish Big 12 slate

No. 24 BYU gymnastics finished its Big 12 schedule with a 4-2 record after defeating West Virginia 195.975-195.275 at Hope Coliseum on Friday night.

BYU athletes secured first place in three of the four events during the meet. Deb Silva led on bars with a career-high score of 9.875, while Kylie Eaquinto posted a 9.875 to lead on floor. On beam, Alilah Alvarado, Scarlett Sonnenberg, and Brynlee Andersen-Broekman all tied for the top spot with scores of 9.850.

The Cougars began their final Big 12 dual meet of the season on uneven bars, where Silva’s performance set the pace for BYU. Senior Eaquinto contributed a 9.800, Ava Jorgensen added a 9.850, and Alvarado scored a 9.800 to close out the rotation.

BYU earned a total of 49.075 on bars to take an early lead over West Virginia, which scored 48.875 on vault.

During vault rotation, Daisy Stephenson and Mya Kirkham both scored 9.750 to start off for BYU. After a fall in the third position, Silva recovered with a score of 9.825 for her second consecutive week achieving that mark, and Eaquinto anchored with a score of 9.775 as BYU totaled 48.875 on vault.

At the halfway point in the meet, BYU led West Virginia by a narrow margin: 97.900-97.675.

In the third rotation on floor exercise—following their highest team floor total since 2022—freshman Sonnenberg opened with a score of 9.800 in her leadoff routine; Stephenson and Andersen-Broekman each followed with scores of 9.850; Silva added another strong performance at 9.825 before Eaquinto achieved her event-leading score; Kirkham closed out floor competition with her own career-high mark of 9.850 in just her second appearance this season.

BYU’s combined effort resulted in a floor total of 49.250 and increased their lead heading into the final rotation: BYU held at147.150 against West Virginia’s146.225.

On beam, Sonnenberg, Alvarado and Andersen-Broekman each recorded scores of9 .850 . The Cougars’ beam lineup finished with an event totalof48 .825 , closing out their road win just under196 points .

Looking ahead , BYU will compete again at Huntsman Center on Saturday , March7 at3 p.m . MT against Utah and West Virginia in atri -meet broadcaston ESPN+ .
