Freshman golfer Kihei Akina from Brigham Young University is set to compete in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, taking place at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, from March 5 to 8.
This will be Akina’s third appearance on the PGA Tour and his fifth professional event overall. His first two PGA Tour events were at the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort in 2024 and 2025. In his debut year, Akina missed the cut by one stroke with scores of 69-69 for a total of 138, finishing two-under par. In 2025, he finished seven-over par after two rounds.
Akina also played in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Utah Championship during both years, tying for 49th place in the event in 2024. He won the Utah Open and has had a strong collegiate season for BYU with five top-10 finishes out of seven events so far. Notably, he placed tied for fifth at both The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate and Arizona N.I.T.
Joining Akina at the Puerto Rico Open are BYU golf alumni Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair, both former third-team All-Americans. Fishburn will be making his 61st start on the PGA Tour while Blair marks his 227th appearance.
Tournament coverage begins Thursday, March 5.
