West Virginia defeated BYU 12-10 on March 20 in the second game of a three-game Big 12 baseball series at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
The matchup saw both teams score frequently, with West Virginia recording 18 hits and BYU collecting 10. Despite BYU’s offensive efforts, two errors contributed to their loss. The Mountaineers improved their record to 15-4, while the Cougars dropped to 9-10.
Crew McChesney led BYU with two hits, four runs batted in, a home run, and a double. Ezra McNaughton added two hits and three runs batted in. Ryder Robinson drove in two runs, while Luke Anderson scored three times and drew two walks. Tu’alau Wolfgramm also contributed with two hits and an RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, McChesney opened the scoring for BYU with a solo home run in the second inning. West Virginia responded immediately to tie the game. In the third inning, McChesney hit a double that brought home three runners for a temporary 4-1 lead. The Cougars extended their advantage to five runs by scoring four more times in the fourth inning.
West Virginia answered back by scoring nine unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings, taking a 12-8 lead. In the ninth inning, McNaughton hit a two-run home run for BYU to narrow the gap, but West Virginia closer David Perez retired the next three batters to secure his second save of the series.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and available on BYUradio.org as well as on the BYU Radio app.
