BYU lost the opening game of a three-game baseball series against Texas Tech by a score of 2-1 on May 7 at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock.

The matchup was marked by strong pitching from both teams, with Texas Tech recording two runs on six hits and BYU scoring one run on four hits. Each team managed to keep the other scoreless in all but one inning.

Luke Anderson led BYU offensively, going two for four with a double. Ridge Erickson contributed by scoring the team’s only run after reaching base with a single. Wayland Crane pitched five and two-thirds innings for BYU, striking out four batters and allowing two earned runs, while Dan Brousseau added one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts.

The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before BYU took an early lead in the third. Singles from Erickson and Anderson set up runners in scoring position, and Ryder Robinson drove in Erickson with a groundout to shortstop. After several more scoreless frames, Texas Tech secured its victory when Logan Huges hit a two-run home run that proved decisive.

The teams will continue their Big 12 series on Friday, May 8 at Rip Griffin Park. The second game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Central Time and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as well as various BYU Radio platforms.
