BYU’s baseball team lost 3-0 to San Diego State on Friday night in the opening game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game was a pitching duel, with SDSU scoring all three of its runs in the fourth inning.
San Diego State improved its record to 4-1 by collecting six hits and leaving three runners on base. BYU, now 2-3 for the season, managed only three hits and stranded four runners.
BYU head coach Trent Pratt commented on his team’s performance: “I thought our pitching was real good tonight and so was SDSU. It came down to one inning where they strung together a couple of hits and we couldn’t answer offensively. We need to come out tomorrow and be more aggressive and make better adjustments at the plate.”
The game remained scoreless through three and a half innings before SDSU broke up BYU starter Garrison Sumner’s no-hitter with two singles and a double in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in all three runs. Aztec starter Dawson Santana pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just two hits for the win, while reliever Aidan Russell closed out the final 2.1 innings for the save.
BYU pitcher Ashton Johnson threw four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, giving up only two hits. Crew McChesney went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.
BYU will next play UC San Diego in La Jolla on Saturday, February 21 at Triton Ballpark as part of the same tournament. The matchup will be broadcast live on BYUradio.org, through the BYUradio app, locally in Utah County on 107.9 FM with Matt Baiamonte providing play-by-play coverage, and streamed nationally via ESPN+ with David Gentile calling the action.
