Brigham Young University defeated Utah Valley University 13-3 in the second edition of this year’s Crosstown Clash, according to a May 12 announcement. The game took place at Miller Park, with BYU improving its record to 26-25 and UVU falling to 16-35.
The result highlights BYU’s strong performance, particularly during a seven-run fourth inning that allowed them to pull away from their rivals. For UVU, Hunter Katschke led the team by going 3-for-4 with a home run. Ezra McNaughton, Tualau Wolfgramm, and Matt Hansen each recorded three runs batted in for BYU.
Utah Valley scored first when Kaden Carpenter hit his fourteenth home run of the season in the opening inning. However, BYU responded quickly with a two-run homer from McNaughton and additional runs from Hansen’s single, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. In the third inning, UVU narrowed the gap after Katschke singled and later scored on a wild pitch but could not sustain momentum as the inning ended on a double play.
BYU extended its advantage significantly with seven runs in the fourth inning. UVU managed another run in the fifth when Katschke hit his forty-sixth career home run—a shot that tied him for eighth place on the Western Athletic Conference career home runs list alongside Wyoming’s Sky Smeltzer. Despite loading the bases later that same inning, Utah Valley was unable to capitalize as BYU reliever Luke Sterner induced an inning-ending groundout.
Utah Valley will conclude its regular season with a three-game series against UT Arlington beginning Thursday, May 14.
