BYU defeated Utah 4-2 on Apr. 15 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship.
The match was marked by a comeback from BYU after losing the doubles point, with four singles victories securing their place in the next round. The result matters as it highlights BYU’s ability to perform under pressure and continue their season in a major conference tournament.
Utah initially took control by winning two out of three doubles matches. However, BYU’s YuYun Chen and Sage Bergeson managed a strong performance with a convincing win in their doubles match. In singles play, Bergeson started BYU’s turnaround with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles. Gracie Levelston then won her match at No. 1 singles, giving BYU its first lead of the day.
Sue Yan Tan extended BYU’s advantage with another straight-set win at No. 3 singles before Karina Mohamed clinched the overall victory for BYU by winning her match at No. 6 singles after a close first set.
Utah secured one point in singles play while another match between Chen and Kaila Barksdale remained unfinished once the team result was decided.
With this win, BYU improved its season record to 17-7 and moves forward to face top-seeded UCF on April 16.
