The BYU Cougars women’s basketball team defeated the Missouri Tigers 93-75 at the Marriott Center on March 23, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).
The win is significant as it marks BYU’s first-ever victory over Missouri, achieved during the Tigers’ inaugural visit to Provo. The game was highlighted by strong performances from Delaney Gibb and Olivia Hamlin, who combined for 52 points and hit a total of ten three-pointers.
Head coach Lee Cummard said, “That was a good game for us. It was really fun to see the aggressiveness coming out from the jump, because it was something we emphasized leading into the game. The crowd was great tonight. Right from the jump, the energy was in the building, and it really played into how our team performed.”
Gibb scored 29 points and became just the third fastest player in BYU women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points. She said about her achievement: “I didn’t really want to think about it. I knew there was a possibility I could break [1,000 points] this game, but today was such an overall success as a team. It’s fun to be able to achieve that on a night where we felt connected together.” Hamlin matched her career high with 23 points.
Kambree Barber recorded her second double-double of the season with twelve points and eleven rebounds. Other contributors included Lara Rohkohl and Bolanle Yussuf with six rebounds each; Brinely Cannon added ten points along with five rebounds and six assists; Sydney Benally contributed six points.
BYU took control early in the first quarter after trailing briefly for only ten seconds before establishing a lead they would not relinquish. The Cougars led by as many as thirty-one late in the third quarter before closing out their historic win.
Next up for BYU is a home matchup against Stanford in Thursday’s WBIT quarterfinal at Marriott Center.
