BYU announced on Apr. 8 that its baseball team will travel to Texas for a three-game Big 12 series against the Houston Cougars, scheduled for April 9-11 at Schroeder Park.
The matchup is notable as both teams are closely ranked in conference play, with BYU holding a record of 15-16 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12, while Houston stands at 16-15 overall and 3-9 in conference games. The series offers both teams an opportunity to improve their standings midway through the season.
All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and fans can also listen via the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM channel 143, or locally on FM radio with Greg Wrubell providing play-by-play commentary. According to the announcement, BYU enters the series hitting .279 as a team—ranking ninth in the Big 12—while Houston is just behind at .277. In terms of pitching, Houston has an earned run average of 5.25 compared to BYU’s ERA of 6.72.
This meeting marks only the fourth time these two programs have played each other in baseball. Their first encounter was earlier this year during a three-game series when Houston won game one but BYU secured victories in games two and three to win that set.
Key players for BYU include Ezra McNaughton, Ryder Robinson, and Easton Jones—all of whom have started every game this season and lead nearly every offensive category for their team. Nate Gray leads BYU’s pitching staff with five wins over ten appearances and is tied for most wins in the Big 12 Conference so far this year.
Looking ahead, Crew McChesney will miss this upcoming series due to an injury sustained during a previous matchup against Oklahoma State.
