BYU baseball lost to Grand Canyon University 10-3 on Apr. 27 in a non-conference game at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark in Phoenix.
The result leaves BYU with a record of 22-21 overall and 11-10 in conference play, while Grand Canyon improves to 15-26 overall and 6-9 in conference games. BYU managed three runs on eleven hits but left eleven runners stranded, while GCU scored ten runs on eight hits and stranded only three.
BYU took an early lead by scoring first in the top of the opening inning when Ryder Robinson doubled, then came home after an Easton Jones single combined with a throwing error. However, Grand Canyon responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the second through hit batters, a wild pitch, and a single. The Lopes extended their advantage with two more runs in the third inning via walks and hits.
Grand Canyon added another run on a solo home run in the fourth before BYU’s Ezra McNaughton hit his own solo homer to cut into the deficit. In the fifth inning, GCU scored five more times using walks, hit batters, and base hits to make it 10-2. After several scoreless innings from both teams, BYU scored once more when Jones tripled home McNaughton for the final run.
After four road games over five days, BYU will return home for a three-game Big 12 series against Utah from April 30 through May 2 at Miller Park. All games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as well as various radio outlets including BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM channel 143 and local FM radio.
