BYU baseball falls to Cal Baptist after early deficit

BYU baseball lost to Cal Baptist 14-7 on Friday at Miller Park in the second game of a three-game series. Cal Baptist built an early lead with a six-run third inning and hit four home runs during the game. BYU scored seven runs on 12 hits, including three home runs.

Cal Baptist took control in the top of the second inning by scoring four runs on five hits, which included two solo home runs, an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly. BYU responded in the bottom half of the inning when Cooper Jones hit a two-run homer over the left field scoreboard, narrowing Cal Baptist’s lead to 4-2.

The Lancers extended their advantage to 10-2 in the third inning after capitalizing on a throwing error and two batters hit by pitches. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam that increased their lead.

BYU added one run in the bottom of the third as Crew McChesney tripled to right field and later scored on Matt Hansen’s groundout. In the fourth inning, Luke Anderson hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot over centerfield. Ezra McNaughton followed with another solo home run for BYU, reducing Cal Baptist’s lead to 10-5.

Cal Baptist continued to score in later innings, opening up with its fourth home run in the sixth and adding more runs through singles and doubles. BYU managed additional runs late in the game but could not overcome Cal Baptist’s lead.

Cooper Jones finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run for BYU. Luke Anderson went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a home run. Ezra McNaughton also contributed with two hits, an RBI, and a homer.

The series will conclude Saturday at Miller Park at 1:00 p.m. MST. The final game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Dave McCann and Gary Shiede calling play-by-play. Radio coverage will be available through BYUradio.org and via Greg Wrubell on the BYU Radio app.
