BYU baseball defeated Utah Tech 19-2 at Miller Park on March 10, taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout the game.
The win is significant for BYU as it prepares to open Big 12 play later in the week. The team showed strong performance both offensively and defensively, which could provide momentum heading into its upcoming series against Cincinnati.
Head coach Trent Pratt said, “It was a great game for us in all aspects. Our guys pounded the zone and threw a lot of strikes. We were patient at the plate and swung at pitches in the strike zone. That was the big thing. We’ll have a good practice tomorrow and then play a real good Cincinnati team this weekend.”
BYU (7-8) scored 19 runs off 22 hits, including six home runs. Ryker Schow and Ryder Robinson each hit two home runs, while McNaughton and Hurdsman added one each. Schow went four-for-five with six runs batted in, while Robinson also went four-for-five with three RBIs. Utah Tech (13-4) managed two runs on five hits, scoring both in the ninth inning.
The Cougars built their lead early, scoring one run in the first inning before adding eight more in the second. They continued to add to their total over five consecutive innings before Utah Tech scored late in the game.
Looking ahead, BYU will begin Big 12 conference play with a three-game home series against Cincinnati from March 12 to March 14. The first game is scheduled for Thursday at Miller Park with streaming available on ESPN+ and radio coverage on BYUradio.
