BYU Director of Athletics Brian Santiago announced on Apr. 8 that Guard Young, head coach of BYU Gymnastics, will not have his contract renewed for the coming season.
The decision marks a significant change in leadership for the BYU gymnastics program, which has seen notable achievements under Young’s guidance over the past eleven years.
“We are grateful for Guard’s 11 years of commitment and hard work with the BYU gymnastics program,” Santiago said. “His efforts in coaching and mentoring student-athletes have made a meaningful impact and we appreciate the time and dedication he has given through his tenure. After thoughtful evaluation of the program’s direction, we believe this is the right time for a change in leadership that can take BYU gymnastics to the next level.”
Young has served as head coach since 2015. During his tenure, he led BYU to six top-25 final national rankings. The team was ranked No. 1 in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference (MRGC) for three consecutive seasons from 2019 to 2022 before transitioning to compete in the Big 12 Conference starting in 2023.
Before coaching, Young was a member of BYU men’s gymnastics from 1996 to 2000, earning six All-America awards and two NCAA National Championships on vault (1999, 2000). As a senior, he finished as runner-up in individual all-around at the NCAA Championships and was inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
With Young’s departure confirmed, Santiago said that BYU will begin a national search to find its next gymnastics head coach.
