Maria Jose “MJ” Barragan finished the first round of the NCAA Louisville Regional tied for sixth place at three-under par on May 11, recording three birdies and no bogeys at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
Barragan’s performance puts her in contention to advance individually to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. To do so, she must finish as the low individual not on an advancing team. Currently, the lowest individual stands two strokes ahead of Barragan and is tied for the lead.
Head coach Carrie Roberts said, “She’s been working on putting the ball more forward with no sway. She’s been hitting the ball like this for a while and just hasn’t made putts, but today she did. Our course management set her up very well and she capitalized on her back nine.”
During her round, Barragan made par on her first twelve holes before securing a birdie on hole four—her thirteenth hole of the day—and then added two more birdies on holes six and eight. She demonstrated strong ball striking by hitting sixteen out of eighteen greens in regulation.
Roberts also said, “Moving forward, we will continue with the game plan of controlling what we can control and focus on placing the ball to give her better odds to score well.”
Barragan is scheduled to begin round two at 7:50 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time alongside Isabella Johnson from Middle Tennessee State and Ella Galitsky from South Carolina. Live scoring updates will be available through Scoreboard as well as additional updates posted to Instagram and X.
