BYU softball began its Big 12 series against No. 13/14 Arizona with a 13-1 loss at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson on Thursday night.
The Cougars, who now have a record of 5-15 overall and 0-1 in conference play, took an early lead by scoring in the top of the first inning. Lily Owens reached base following an error by Arizona, hitting the ball to the right field wall. Hailey Shuler then drove her home with a double into right center.
Arizona responded immediately, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning after batting through their order and loading the bases twice. This gave them an 11-1 advantage after one inning.
In the second inning, Arizona added two more runs using two hits, two walks, and a fielder’s choice to bring the score to 13-1.
BYU had opportunities later in the game, placing a runner on third base in the third inning and putting two runners on base in the fifth. However, they did not add any further runs. The game concluded after five innings under college softball’s run rule.
The teams will continue their series on Friday at 3 p.m. MT, with coverage available on ESPN+.
